The
truth is
learned,
never told.
My mother, Berniece Hollingsworth (she was not given middle
name at birth), loved music. We were poor, extremely poor. Her
husband (my father) abandoned the family in 1959. I was
three (3) years old when he walked out the door. I never saw, nor
heard from or spoke to him the rest of my life. He never gave my
mother, or his children, a nickel. Not a single nickel. Ever.
We may have been dirt poor, but my mom kept that record player
spinning all day. Her love of music and the words to her favorite
songs taught me so much. With little to nothing by way of material
possessions, the richness of song and music filled the transient
apartments we lived in over the many years. Be it a 45 or an LP,
we shared in our mother’s joy hearing it over and over. We would
listen for hours. For fun, my mom would have little pantomiming
contests on the weekend evenings. I would do, “King of The Road.”
I sang these for you, my grandchildren. It is my gift of song to you.
Rainy Night in Georgia, Taxi, Desiderata, Old Rivers, Puff, Cycles
and The End, have deep meaning to me. The others are for fun and
the Elvis ones were at grandma’s suggestion. I did this CD so that
you could hear your old grandpa. I love you with all my heart. I
always will. Perhaps this will help you always remember that.
Included is an audio tape of my three (3) books: The Zoebirds,
Austin & Poppy and Charlie’s Tail. The story of The Zoebirds,
was first thought of in my teens. When you hear these stories, I
hope you remember they are a window into my heart and soul.
Being sixty-
many years, the one constant I have always found to be true is that
honesty, kindness and love will guide the way. Choose wisely. Gregory Lee Husby
